I have to admit I was not impressed with Zombie SEIU as it was run under Führer Stern's watch, but Randy Shaw's article at BeyondChron gave me a flicker of a hope that incoming International President Mary Kay Henry's administration might have the brains to lead the Zombies out of the mess the Führer has made. Squaring up with UNITE/HERE & NUHW would go a long way towards advancing both the interests of SEIU and labor in general.
I'm somewhat worried about Henry the dark horse candidate turned International President. I had high hopes two other unlikely high office candidates Obama and the Governator, given their obvious difference from the usual crop of candidates, would have the courage to lead in new and constructive ways...and we all see how well they've worked out for the working poor. Obama & SEIU: no EFCA or public option for universal healthcare, and the Governator's relentless attacks on the disabled poor and their caretakers.
Meh, we'll see.

It appears that Mary Kay Henry is a lot like Stern. At least it doesn't seem as if Henry is doing anything different with regard to NUHW. The phony blocking charges with the NLRB and PERB continue to be filed by SEIU-UHW with no end in sight.
ReplyDeleteAs an outsider but nevertheless an SEIU member with another local, I can objectively say that UHW will probably never take the high road and allow fair and free elections to go forward in order to win the hearts and minds of California's healthcare workers. It's fair to say that NUHW has no choice but to continue the civil war that Stern and Burger started. NUHW will never roll over. The dedicated members and volunteers of NUHW will hunker down and increase their efforts to defeat the callous and anti-democratic SEIU-UHW.
NUHW RISING! UNITE HERE RISING! SEIU DIMINISHING!
Seems to me in a short perod these elections will happen and NUHW will then be busting their butt for another short period while they settle contracts and get the dues rolling again........ Then.....
ReplyDeletecomes expansion ........ There are a lot of disgrunted members in Bargaining units all over the U.S. I wonder where there would be a concentration that could be a solid base for NUHW expansion....... say somewhere on the east coast?
Heh heh you aren't the only one who bursting at the seems to get out of the corptocracy that is SEIU. Read this comment from "way back when".

Hi, there! I am confused about your calling Mary Kay Henry a dark horse candidate. She is from the San Francisco area and is personally known among many of the current and former UHW members.
ReplyDeleteTrue - she wasn't as visible as our trustees. But if you look her up in Perez Stern's archives you'll see Mary Kay tried to get members arrested (the police told her no) and she's pretty much a member of the old guard.
I was confused by the Beyond Chron piece until I focused on the the fact that Randy Shaw was writing about what she SHOULD do, not what she shows any signs of doing.
I hope that public pressure forces Mary Kay to renounce outwardly Stern's dastardly and disasterous policies. But that's not going to happen unless a lot of people get on her back - esp. the reporters who have been clamining that voting for her was a vote against Andy Stern. Hardly!! If you read Anna Burger's concession letter you'll see why she could never be elected president. She just doesn't have an executive-style personality. BUT make no mistake - this had NOTHING to do with rejecting Stern or his policies. MKH has been right in there with both hands dirty.
